Uptown Manhattan, the vast area north of 59th Street, is where the bustle of Midtown gives way to a quaint, oh-so-comfortable domesticity. Here among the stately mansions and luxurious apartments is where you’ll spot ladies in mink and business tycoons dressed top-to-toe in Armani – this is the area of New York that exudes elegance.
The neighbourhood is split right down the middle by the lungs of the city - the 843 acres of beautiful trails, reservoirs and garden that make up Central Park. On one side, the opulent residential blocks of the Upper East Side, also home to the City’s finest museums, including the Metropolitan and the other great cultural institutions of Museum Mile. On the other, Upper West Side equally predominately residential but still a hub of high culture with the Lincoln Centre and the Natural Museum of History just a few of the neighbourhood’s key destinations.
Farther north, past 110th street, is Harlem – rich in African-American culture – and experiencing something of a renaissance.
