The science of creativity
Stimuli are plentiful on the buzzing streets of bohemian Islington. Politicians rub shoulders with artists and writers. Creative life shines brightly in the many trendy boutiques, bookshops, cafes, and bars that rock until the small hours. However, inspiration doesn’t happen in a single flash of brilliance, instead, a chain of many tiny sparks lead to creative flow. And to document those moments of insight, Arlington Avenue provides just the right kind of setting for unleashing your inner muse. Tucked away on a quietly exclusive Georgian street, this comfortable two bedroom, one bathroom home, with its high ceilings, and glass covered balcony provides a serene retreat from ennui, and the clamour of the city.
Your cultured hosts are a senior manager, and a graphic designer and writer, and their love of learning is reflected in the layers of book-lined shelves housing an array of eclectic tomes, from art to history. Their fascination with London is displayed on the walls in the form of distinctive, original art work, and although they like nothing more than escaping to their Essex home, both delight in the night time view from the bedroom window, of the Gherkin, and the Natwest Tower, and all the city lit up.
The right hemisphere
The trick is to engage the right side of the brain. Daydreaming unlocks the creative mind, but you must enchant the senses. Not a problem in the light drenched, glass covered balcony, where on a warm day, you can push the glass right back and expose the sky whilst delighting in something cool and refreshing.
In the restful sitting room, all the deep, comforting, rich colours of Freud’s couch encourage the streaming of consciousness, and high ceilings and ornate cornicing add form and grandeur to your mental perambulations. Two simple yet tasteful bedrooms and a modern bathroom, replete with the prerequisite onefinestay luxuries of White Company products and heaps of fluffy towels will revitalize every creative hemisphere.
Courting the muse
The muse rises early, and so will you with the lure of Upper Street only a ten minute stroll away. Take the leisurely route, through some of the serenely elegant period garden squares, which are literally on your doorstep, and at their best in the early light. On arrival, you’ll find a plethora of hip cafes, where a warm croissant and a cappuccino are the ideal companions to your creative endeavours. Or jump on the Victoria Line from nearby Highbury and Islington station and you’ll be in the creative hubbub of town in a speedy 12 minutes flat.
The only hanging space available in the home is in the fitted wardrobe at the end of the single bed in the second bedroom, which is a little awkwardly accessed.
General storage in both bedrooms is quite limited.
There are 2 flights of narrow stairs within the home which may be harder to negotiate for the less nimble.
Though babies are welcome, the hosts request that young children and toddlers do not come to the house.
There is an double sofa bed in the sitting room that can be set up for your stay. Please let our reservations team know if you would like these arrangements to be made. Please note that the sofa bed is slightly smaller than the standard double size.
This home doesn't have air conditioning. Between June and September, we'll place fans in each bedroom. Please let us know if you'd like fans outside the summer period.
