Rue Saint Antoine was a hôtel particulier crafted in 1626, and has since aged beautifully. The cavernous original fireplace of the uncluttered dining room warms a long wooden dining table, its transparent chairs depicting a move to the modern. Here ‘70s floral and spoked clamshell chairs in turquoise are high fashion against the contrasting old stone walls. Dress up for Carette, your local salon de thé at the Place des Vosges, or explore the varied palette of antique and art shops of your arrondissement. When you head home, the warmth of the red feature wall and the comfortable corner sofa will seem all the more cosy.
A family of four, your hosts enjoy high art and haute couture. She works in fashion, he is a museum devotee, and their daughter is a budding musician. They visit the Louvre together weekly, often stopping at one of their favourite local fromageries on the way home.
On the lower-ground floor the building bares its well-wrought roots: vaulted stone arches and flagged floors which now frame sofas, table football games, and even a fitness room. From here, wend your way two floors up the solid stone staircase and you’ll uncover the master bedroom and study – set on mossy green carpets and panelled with the darkest wood.
Young ones will find their own creative space, replete with a much-played piano and well-thumbed books. And though the kitchen is temptingly sleek, breakfast may be best from one of the many nearby boulangeries. Sit outside on shaded Parisian pavements or return home to enjoy among the trees and shrubs of the private courtyard patio.
