Cradle of civilization
Here’s a home so warm, welcoming and well-connected that we wouldn’t be surprised if it gave rise to a heroic couplet or two. Generations of history are on show - the honeyed parquet floors, the antiquarian books and the original fireplace. With views out into the garden square, there’s a real sense of tranquillity to this listed home - its high ceilings ensure that while the space is grand it never for a moment feels stuffy. You’re close to the museums and Hyde Park, while for shops, bars and restaurants, look to Kensington High Street and Knightsbridge.
Your host is from Greece. An itinerant professor, he’s currently based at the London Business School, but, like all the best heroes, he’s widely travelled. He now splits his time between London, Athens, New York, and Kea, where his desk overlooks the wine-dark expanses of the Aegean.
Myth and mystery
Intellect and pulchritude combine in this home’s expansive sitting room. Rich leather, pre-Columbian pottery and original artwork compliment the room’s gracious proportions and abundant light. The dining table seats four in front of the huge bay window, and the sofa transforms into a double bed. Next door, the kitchen’s well equipped, its walls are a-glow in sunset orange. The master bedroom has a stately atmosphere, its king-sized bed framed in leather, while, with its natural stone tiles, walk-in shower and mirrored walls, the ensuite resembles a luxury spa. There’s a second shower room for guests, with delicately mosaicked walls, and of course, a stash of our gorgeous White Company toiletries.
Exploring the city has never been easier, for you’re within walking distance of many of the main attractions. Marvel at the artefacts on show at the V&A, sun yourself in Hyde Park, and then indulge in a little bacchanalian excess in the bars and restaurants of Kensington and Knightsbridge. The journey from Earls Court to Piccadilly Circus takes a mere twelve minutes.
