Once, it was a piano factory, but now Caranday Villas II is a London home humming Rhapsody In Blue. There’s a New York vibe to the sleek double height living space, and a hip industrial aesthetic to the enormous windows and the polished concrete floor. Quirky antiques and tactile textiles complete the look, and the result is as classy as it is comfortable. Whether you want diamonds or dusters, candy floss or cashmere, nearby Westfield, one of Europe's largest shopping centres, will have it, alongside bars, restaurants and a simply enormous cinema. Or, walk to Notting Hill and check out Portobello Road Market. Contemporary living in one of the world's most historic cities - now that's just grand.
Your hosts, an American couple, have called London home since 1990. Their first project after retiring was the renovation of Caranday Villas II, which they chose for its secluded location as well as easy access to all that greater London has to offer.
Off the scale
The core look to this home's central living space is spare and pared back, a carefully chosen colour palette dominated by shades of elephant and dove. Muted sophistication is given life by splashes of the most intense, citrus orange, while sunshine pours through the window onto a pair of couches so pale and soft, they could have been spun from the clouds. Nestle up in front of the gas fire, or cook a feast in the slick white kitchen - and the dining table will seat up to eight. At the top of the spiral staircase to find a formal sitting room and a funky study with views down into the main living area, alongside books, a desk and a sofa in elegant pea green.
Those desirous of a little fresh air can take a seat amidst the bay trees on the private balcony, otherwise, you've two fresh double bedrooms and two brand new bathrooms. The master ensuite is a particular pleasure, with its full length windows, a walk-in shower and an oversized free standing tub.
Those who've come to London to shop will be racing over to Westfield, to browse British brands such as Mulberry, Burberry and Top Shop. You'll find restaurants and cafes alongside the boutiques and gastropubs. Walk to Notting Hill and Holland Park, or, should you wish to head into town, the tube to Oxford Circus takes around 12 minutes.
There is a nearby community centre which can make noise until 11PM during the summer.
There is a temple nearby from which you may be able to hear chanting occasionally.
