Homecoming Julia Roberts couldn’t help but fall for Hugh Grant, and here, among the pastel painted houses you won’t be able to help losing your heart to Notting Hill. Just west of the very centre of town and up alongside the almost ethereal beauty of Hyde Park, you’re in an area that’s aspirational, yes, but very much in touch with its independent, artistic roots. And not far from the fountains of Kensington Gardens is Chepstow Villas, a peaceful family home. Tastefully decorated and with a private decked garden, here’s a location in which to start your own Notting Hill romance. Spirited away Your hosts are a pair of lawyers, he’s Canadian while she hails from the USA. They came here from Amsterdam, intending to stay only a couple of years. Then London worked its magic and now, they’re UK citizens. Brief encounter The serenely neutral sitting room of Chepstow Villas will sweep you off your feet and onto the large grey couch, with its view out through the original windows. The shelves are loaded with books, select one and return with it to the leather bucket chair, or head on past the eight seater dining table and down the steps into the garden. Back inside, the kitchen’s neat and modern, the bar area perfect for parking any guests with a glass of chardonnay while you sauté your onions. The bedrooms are downstairs, Audrey Hepburn keeping a watchful eye over the master double. You’ve your own ensuite, while the kids can splash around in the family bathroom and then retire to the bunk beds next door. Incredible journey Notting Hill is a film set made real, with cobbled mews, chocolate box terraces and stucco townhouses all around. Hunt down some vintage Burberry or a little antique lace at Portobello Road market, picnic beside the Serpentine or simply grab a latte in one of many independent cafes. The eating options are endless, the boutiques, fabulous. And if you’re short of reading material, you’ll find book shops aplenty.
