Now and then, we all wish for some countryside calm. But sigh no more. Among the shuttered houses and village shops of the rue du Commerce, there winds the sweetest little lane you ever saw. All mossy cobblestones and slumbering leaves, this is a home to bring harmony to the soul – and you haven't stepped inside yet. When you do, you’ll be just as delighted by the Art Deco touches, the boldly vibrant art and the unique Second World War wardrobe with its silvery shine. And this country hideaway happens to be a ten minute walk from the Eiffel Tower.
A successful forager
Raised in the 16th arrondissement, your hostess left France for London fifty years ago. Now an antique dealer, you’ll chance upon some of her choicest finds in her Parisian pied à terre.
Along a garden lane lined with generous and gorgeous greenery, you’ll be throwing sidelong glances all the way to your front door. Impossibly sweet on the outside, this home is all confidence and colour. The palette is a neutral soothing white, on which pop red Art Deco chairs, bright blue rugs and the bold, vibrant brushstrokes of modern artwork. Throw yourself upon the weathered leather sofa awhile, or step round to the brightly modern kitchen.
Speaking of things unique, you must take a look at the metal wardrobe, used by the French army in the Second World War, as well as the cloud-like curve of the bedroom mirror. Open wide the window and let the country air waft in, or freshen up instead in the little, but lovely, shower room.
For all the blissfulness of your home, you’re right by the Seine as well as Paris’s best known landmark. But don’t hurry there just yet. George Orwell once worked on the rue du Commerce, where the spire of St-Jean Baptiste de Grenelle frames some elegant shops and alluring cafes. You can walk on water in the Allée des Cygnes, sun yourself in the Champ du Mars or skip up the Eiffel Tower and see the city spread before you. As for being there, the Métro from Commerce to Châtelet takes just over twenty minutes.
