Rue de Tocqueville Townhouse

Parc Monceau, Western Paris

Best of both worlds

Once the home of Isadora Duncan, it comes as no surprise that Rue de Tocqueville Townhouse has a sense of poise. Stepping into the home, you’ll first come to the sitting room, full of Hausmannian features (parquet floors, an ornamental fireplace). While the space feels traditional, the furniture is sleek and contemporary, with a pair of low sofas facing each other over a dark coffee table. The open-plan kitchen and dining room has a futuristic feel, with stainless steel appliances and high-gloss flagstone floors. Next to the dining table (which seats six), a gilt-framed portrait serves as a reminder of this home’s classical pedigree. Outside, there’s a contemporary split-level courtyard, with a choice of outdoor dining tables, and plenty of greenery.

Upstairs, there’s a smart second sitting room, and four bedrooms. Three of them are fun and cosy, each painted a different colour, but the master bedroom is simply impressive, with floor-to-ceiling windows on one side of the room, and a spiral staircase, leading upwards. Up here, the roof terrace has a view over the neighbourhood’s more traditional rooftops.
