Curtain raiser Cornering a row of Georgian townhouses, Culford Road sets an impressive scene. Behind the ivy-covered brickwork, this period home has high ceilings and wood-burning stoves, and the white walls are hung with film posters. The living areas are pared-down – all linen upholstery and reclaimed wood. But the kitchen is more dramatic with its contemporary conservatory-style extension. Here a long dining table sits beneath the yawning skylights and is bordered with an unusual arch of ivy. While through the glass doors there’s a pretty patio, with the bright lights of Hackney Empire just beyond the garden wall. Star quality Theatre brought your hosts together, when he was freelance directing and she was studying to be a theatre designer. Success has followed them ever since: to the Royal Court and Bush theatres, as well as into television: he’s won three BAFTAs in total. Well-framed The charming sitting room is filled with wooden antiques and well-stocked bookshelves, and shuttered windows frame views of the leafy streets. Past the open wood-burner is the generous kitchen, with a central island and a collection of cookbooks. You’ve access out to the garden from here, or climb the stairs to the master bedroom, which has its own balcony. There are a further four bedrooms, each with soothing hues and stripped floorboards, and the bathrooms range from the wood-framed bathtub to the decadent wet-room shower.
