Kith and kin
This is a home whose embrace is almost maternal, where wooden floors, period features and bursts of colour go hand in hand. There’s space here for everyone, from teens to teenies, and a few quiet corners where mums and dads can snatch precious minutes with a book. The garden’s particularly large, and if further steam-letting is required, walk to the endless turf of nearby Hampstead Heath. Pretty West Hampstead has a great range of neighbourhood restaurants and useful shops, and the West End is an easy tube ride away. Satisfying the whole brood is a tall order, but if anywhere can do it, it’s here.
The ties that bind
Your hosts are a happy clan who hail from Scotland. They and their black Labrador spend as much time as they can up north. And they’re getting ready for a new adventure – an extended visit to New York.
Come one come all
Detached houses are rare in London, and more elusive still are original staircases, and a grand hallway such as the one you’ll discover upon your arrival. Cross the chequerboard tiles to the first of three sitting rooms – two elegant spaces and a snug TV room packed with books. The rustic eat-in kitchen opens out onto the mature garden, and everywhere you’ll see gilt, shutters, art and heaps of cosy cushions. Point the kids in the direction of the two cheery single bedrooms and your guests to their spacious double, then retreat to the calm silence of the master suite. The ensuite bathroom’s yours and yours alone, and the kingsized bed will leave you rested and ready for the adventures of the morrow.
If you’re happy and you know it
Hampstead is filled with families and it’s easy to see why - the streets are broad and peaceful, the shops are abundant and, with Hampstead Heath close by, there’s plenty of space to play. Fly a kite on Parliament Hill, swim at Gospel Oak Lido, or mosey on down to the cobbled streets of Hampstead Village and check out some notably swanky boutiques. Closer to home, there’s a more cosmopolitan vibe to Kilburn High Road, and the tube from Kilburn to Oxford Circus takes around fifteen minutes.
