Dawson Place

Notting Hill, Central London

Grace of line

It’s a question for the ages: does art imitate life, or life art? We don’t know, but here’s a home brimming with both. The living doesn’t get much better than at Notting Hill, and beneath those layers of local colour, broadly brushstroked bars and Kensington Garden’s shaded splendour, Dawson Place is about as arty as they come. Elegant with antique furniture, soaringly high-ceilinged, oil paintings glow from each wall and gilt frames shine in the sunlight that can’t help but glance in approvingly. But don’t just sit for your portrait – outside, you’ve a landscape well worth exploring too.

Your hosts know a good thing when they see it, and Dawson Place is just that. A grand location for a grand family, he works in the City and she comes from the Redwood family whose artwork studs the walls. They have three boys, two girls and one family dog.

Great exhibition

Like the best paintings, this home works on different levels. Start with the sitting room, a stately place of paintings, sunshine and soft sofas, before eyeing up the colourful kitchen. Large windows spill light over the glossy surfaces and dining table, while, just outside, the terrace is splendidly scenic. A canvas of White Company goodies graces the modern bathroom, and, when you’re looking picture-perfect, drop in on the double bedroom, a den of elegance and artwork alike.

You can skip down a level to the lower sitting room next, all clean lines and chic furnishings. There, prise a book from the shelves, settle into the sofa and get acquainted with the gallery of artwork around you. The upper level holds the master bedroom, home to an eloquent mirror, dreamy double bed and delightful artwork to stare at until your eyes feel droopy with sleep.

Gallery scene

Kensington Gardens are the scene for that romantic saunter, and art can be compared to nature in the Serpentine Gallery. You might unearth an old masterpiece or two in the stalls of Portobello Road, where candy-coloured townhouses whet the appetite for Notting Hill’s peerless restaurants. As for shopping, head to Westbourne Grove, try High Street Kensington or burrow into the boutiques of the West End. The tube from Notting Hill Gate to Oxford Circus takes just eight minutes.
