Peaceful West Village exists on the margins of bustling Manhattan, quiet as a library with leafy streets that transport you to an earlier era, when writers and artists mingled together. Many local celebrities still remain, but wealth takes on a different genre here. Wind down your story arc for the day with a stroll through the neighbourhood's restaurants and boutiques, before retiring to this gorgeous townhouse.
Our hosts are a literary sort, both writers who run a small publishing imprint right out of this spacious home. She's wanted to live in the Village ever since she saw the cover of "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan," he's wanted to ever since he saw Lenny Bruce there. You'll soon understand why the neighbourhood inspires them.
Bound to please
Chapter one begins with a living room, which opens up on bookshelves and a large window offering views of the quiet neighbourhood. Towards the back is the kitchen, a lovingly rendered scene with rustic tones aided by paper-white cabinets and a farm table that might be at home in a Southern Gothic. Out the back you'll find a lush garden with a view of something you can judge by its cover: the home's beautiful stone facade.
Plot your course upstairs via the twisting sky lit staircase. There's a study on the second floor, with wall-to-wall books and seating perfect for tome contemplation. Read to the little ones at night, then tuck them in on the bedroom on this floor before heading upstairs to the master bedroom, reminiscent of a literary salon with an ottoman and a couch at the foot of the bed. It's perfect for the late night chats that often serve as the epilogue to the end of a busy day.
The omnivore's dilemma
Subway stations punctuate every block, so getting anywhere in the city is a breeze. Be sure to catch the local attractions, though, as the home is within five minutes of the finest independent cinemas in town - IFC, Film Forum, Angelika. Our hosts recommend Cafe Henri across the street, but with Blue Ribbon Bakery, Ottomanelli's Meats, Faicco's Italian, and Murray's Cheese all so close, you might want to try cracking their cook books.
This home features three floors. The second bedroom is on the second floor and the master bedroom is on the third.
An airbed can be set up upon request in the boy's bedroom to sleep one adult, bringing the maximum occupancy to five.
The fireplaces in this home are ornamental.
