Ten out of ten
Mark our words – you won’t find a more fascinating home than the one behind this gloss-black door in a gated community off Whitehall. Few townhouses in London have been so carefully or proudly kept: each original detail – ornate panels, stuccoed ceilings, gilded frames – has lived here for centuries. As have the portraits of every host since 1735, which today watch over the grand staircase. Whether you’re talking politics (or napping) in the study, or strategising your day out from the chequer-floored entrance hall, Downing Street redefines the meaning of ‘prime real estate’.
Your incumbent host is a family man and a man of the people, but he always finds time to get out on his bicycle. He’s got a keen eye for cast ironwork – no wonder the wrought balusters and iconic railings at Downing Street took his fancy.
‘That’s not how it’s spelt’, we hear you say. But you’ll find your mind changed after just a few days’ stay at this remarkable location. Feel free to invite your London friends for dinner in the state dining room – it’s no stranger to parties – and you can always retreat to the white drawing room for private parley among paintings by J M W Turner.
Another landscape awaits you in the garden, but it’s this historied home’s little details that demand discovery. The cabinet, for example, is one of the oddest-looking things we’ve ever seen.
A friendly cat called Larry lives here. He's captured guests' hearts, and many more mice, too. Unfortunately, his residence means guests with allergies will need to avoid this home.
Some guests have found the near-permanent encampment of press photographers outside the home slightly disturbing.
When you look carefully, you'll see that this home has more seats than power.
