Eland Road is, quite simply, delightful. Primary colours and tropical plants put a spring in the weariest step, while the gentle sitting room will remind you to make a little time for yourself. Let the toddlers spray toys across the kitchen’s polished floor – this is a home built with family in mind. And the same can be said for Clapham, a genial corner of the city with quiet, established streets and, at its heart, a large and deservedly popular common. Northcote Road’s cafes team with mummies and daddies, while Clapham Old Town’s one of the best nightspots south of the river. Call the babysitter and get your gladrags on – tonight it’s adults only.
Meet the parents
Your hosts are a banker and a psychologist. They and their two young boys have been in Eland Road for five years, and they love Clapham’s friendly atmosphere. They used to live in Hong Kong, and you’ll spot oriental art and fabrics scattered all around their home.
Share and share alike
Eland Road appears small from the road, but don’t be deceived – this home goes on and on. Your hosts extended to its rear, and now an enormous eat-in kitchen flows out into the mature garden, where you’ve al fresco dining equipment and a Moroccan log burner. Inside, the kitchen’s beautifully equipped with everything from a Nespresso machine to a Chinese cleaver, and with a comfy sofa and a breakfast bar alongside the generous dining table, cooking never need feel lonely. The sitting room features hand-carved furniture and a marble fireplace, above which sits a fig so ripe you’ll ache to pluck it from the wall. The children’s bedrooms are charming and fun, their toy chests full to bursting. And if you ever have trouble sleeping through the night then fret no more, for the master bedroom is a drowsy haven, with huge windows and a soft sleigh bed to whisk you away to dreamland.
Clapham’s cafes and shops are particularly welcoming of their young clientele, and you’ll have no problem stocking up on picture books and booties. Adults are not neglected, though, for both Northcote Road and the streets along the common heave with funky boutiques. The bars of Clapham Old Town are never less than buzzing, and the journey from Clapham Junction to Oxford Circus takes around twenty five minutes.
