A home usually echoing with classical song, this is the place for true harmony. And from the inviting sitting room with its original fireplace, to the open-plan kitchen with modern glass doors out into the garden, here there’s room for the whole chorus. While the older set might be content lounging on the patio or soaking in the wood-panelled bath tub, younger travellers have a wealth of toys to choose from, including a petite dining set and wooden railway. With Barnes Common and an assortment of delis and boutiques nearby, you needn’t face the city if you prefer the quiet of the suburbs. Though central London is just a 15-minute train ride away should you wish to try a different tune.
Melody and harmony
Since meeting at Cambridge University your hosts have danced to the same tune, whether travelling the Americas or raising their children. They moved here recently, and your hostess – a classical singer – has reaped the benefits of the home’s hush.
A sunlit breakfast at the kitchen’s workbench-style table might be how you choose to start the day – turn up the radio and whistle while you work at the sleek black Aga. With sheet music and music books, family portraits and university photographs on display, there’s plenty to peruse.
Though it’s just as tempting to slide open the doors and head straight out into the garden, with its manicured lawn and pretty wire furniture. When the sunshine fades, let the smoke from the chiminea mingle with the last strains of conversation. And rest assured, you’ll have no trouble sending little ones to sleep in the peaceful bunk bedroom.
The fireplaces in the home are not available for guests to use during their stay.
