Avignon in Abingdon Square
While the glossy skyscrapers and bustling avenues of Midtown illuminate and invigorate Manhattan, those seeking a setting more quaint than quintessential head south to the enviable West Village. At an intersection where delightful bistros, bakeries and brownstones meet is Abingdon Square Park, a peaceful pocket of greenery. The neighbourhood’s European charms complement this two bedroom, two bathroom pied-à-terre just steps from the scenic square. Here, French provincial furnishings, wood-beamed ceilings and rustic, yet light spaces give the feel of a French chateau.
With a knack for setting a scene, the host is a successful professional in the arts.
Much like the West Village (or perhaps Montmartre in Paris), the interiors of the home are eclectic and charming. The centrepiece is an expansive, exposed brick living room with a baby grand piano, large wooden daybed, gorgeous chandelier and an industrial size bellow used as a coffee table. A round dining table with eight French bistro chairs sits before a large window providing panoramic city views. A separate book-filled study has a floor-to-ceiling library with a mobile ladder and rich leather seating.
Cheerful yellows and blues make their way into the bedrooms where crisp white linens are tucked neatly into ornate French provincial bed frames. Colourful Italian pottery lines the shelving and walls of the kitchen and bathrooms. Guests can sip their morning café and watch the city come to life from a private roof terrace accessible from inside the home.
The West Village’s tilted grid system provides a convenient excuse to get lost in its web of idyllic side streets lined with cosy cafes and boutiques. Every Saturday local farmers erect an open-air market at Abingdon Square where early birds snap up heirloom vegetables, fruit, fresh fish and cheese. The vibrant neighbourhoods of Soho, Tribeca and the Meatpacking District are all within a ten-fifteen minute walk from the village.
This home is for adults only.
This rustic home features beautiful beamed ceilings, exposed brick, and tall windows. It is of the creative mind and filled with artwork, books and eclectic trinkets from the hosts' travels. For some this is the ideal space in which to lose themselves in a good book. Others may prefer a more minimalist presentation.
