What it’s all about
Heath Hurst Road speaks of lives lived to the full. There’s a warmth to the cosy rooms, filled with a precious cargo of souvenirs, curios and art, and furniture bearing the caresses of generations. Books are everywhere, and the walls jostle with photographs. You’re just steps from the ancient turf of Hampstead Heath, an Eden in the city, with its bathing ponds and wild woods. Fly a kite, chase a puppy, or visit nearby Hampstead village. The playground of London’s intellectual elite, these cobbled streets house cafes and bookshops alongside glamorous restaurants and designer boutiques. So read, romp and rest - this is what memories are made of.
Your hosts are a creative family, about to wave their daughter off to university. He’s a keen cyclist, and all three love to travel.
Healthy, wealthy and wise
To say this home has personality would be something of an understatement. The study’s stuffed with well-thumbed tomes, the country kitchen’s clearly the haunt of a keen chef, and in every room, you’ll find furniture that’s as intriguing as it is beautiful. The ground floor reception room is simple and polished, here too, you’ll find a dining table beneath a bright chandelier. There’s a snug sitting room up on the first floor, and you can entertain yourselves either with cable TV or around the piano. There are two bedrooms, a pretty single and a glamorous master, with antique furniture and even a dressing room. And outside, you’ve a tangled patio garden, with trailing foliage and sweetly scented herbs.
For all its close proximity to the West End, there’s a sense that Hampstead is a little apart from the rest of London. An island of fresh air and studied bohemianism, think well-worn velvet and freshly baked cakes. You’re close to Hampstead Heath, while Hampstead village is full of gorgeous shops and restaurants. Curl up by the fire in your local pub, or go into town. The tube from Hampstead to Leicester Square takes around seventeen minutes.
