The presence of love
Highgate is one of those places that inspires emotion in people’s breasts. Having been home to literary greats such as Betjeman, AE Housman and Coleridge, this charming area is now ready to inspire a deep delight of a family getaway. This Victorian townhouse has been beautifully refurbished to modern and stylish standards, making it a superb place to relax or be inspired. Open up the bay windows and let the area’s rich history flood in as you think about penning something timeless.
Your hostess, a geological scientist, has two children, meaning that her home is a combination of an inspirational and beautiful place and a practical family home. Her easy-going nature is reflected in the fuss-free yet elegant décor. Her husband is a professor, and the two of them have made this home somewhere to unwind with a good book
A vision in a dream
The open-plan ground floor allows the adults to cook and chat in the substantial and contemporary kitchen, complete with glass ceiling and in-built espresso machine. Children can run rampant in the neighbouring play room, which is choc a bloc with puzzles and toys. The home is fully imbued with a creative spirit. Drawings and paintings – many by the children – adorn every wall.
The cosy sitting room offers privacy to read and write in peace, or if inspiration comes easier outdoors, there’s a private garden, with trampoline, slide and rope swing and a barbecue for summer cooking. Upstairs, the first floor is home to a gorgeous master bedroom and stunning ensuite, complete with a superb white dressing table and capacious wardrobes. Next door a luxurious roll-top bath awaits after the young ones have gone off to sleep. A children's room with toys galore and a double bed is further down the hall. While upstairs again another bathroom and two top-floor double bedrooms, one with an ensuite shower, finish the story.
