A short walk from the shores of Cooper Lake, this timbered home is quietly impressive. The back patio has a barbecue, while the view from the front porch swing takes in two acres of open fields. Indoors, wooden beams arch over antique furnishings, there are rich wooden floorboards and period paintings hang on bright white walls. But the biggest waves are made in the second sitting room, which has a vaulted ceiling and a raised natural-stone fireplace.
Cooper Lake is the largest natural lake in the Catskills, and it’s only a short hike uphill. Even closer at hand is Tinker Street, Woodstock’s main thoroughfare, home to cafés and restaurants, antique shops and an arthouse cinema. Hikers should also head to the summit of Overlook Mountain (a 15-minute drive) for its beautiful views and intriguing ruins, or Kaaterskill Falls (a 40-minute drive), a picturesque two-drop waterfall. The charming town of Phoenicia is worth visiting as well – here you can browse the shops along Main Street, or go tubing on the rapids of Esopus Creek.
How to get there
Cold Brook House is a two-hour drive from New York City. While Tinker Street and Cooper Lake are within walking distance, you’ll need a car to reach the local towns and hiking spots.
Peace and quiet
With a swing seat and coffee table, the southeast-facing front porch is the best spot for watching the sunrise. A set of double doors opens from the driveway into the stone-floored entrance hall, which leads to the bathroom straight ahead, and the beamed sitting room on the left. Ahead is a twin bedroom, with antique furniture, followed by the open-plan kitchen, which has slate countertops and a skylight.
On the left is the second sitting room. A long, French-style dining table seats eight, while a white sofa and twin armchairs rest on a seagrass rug. Out the back – via glass doors – is the paved patio, which has a barbecue and a dining table for four. The master bedroom with access to the back patio and its own stone-floored ensuite are to the left of the second sitting room, and upstairs is another twin bedroom and bathroom.
Since the onefinestay photo shoot, the second bedroom has been updated with a queen bed in place of two twin beds.
This home doesn't have central air conditioning. However, even in the warmer months, it stays very cool. The master bedroom has a window air conditioning unit. Please let us know if you'd like fans for your stay.
Guests are welcome to make use of the fireplace in the sitting room, but the one in the second sitting room is purely decorative.
