Lady Somerset Road

Hampstead, North London

Wishful thinking

Swimming into the sunrise, the water droplets mingling with the morning dew. Rolling turf and brooding woodlands, darting swallows and flustered geese. This is Hampstead Heath, London’s very own Eden, and just two streets away you will find Lady Somerset Road. Spacious, airy, and with a majesty that only the Victorians could master, this home will entrance you with its stained glass, colourful walls and sweetly tangled garden. The tube ride into town takes less than twenty minutes – but such is the sense of calm in this bewitching home, you may find it difficult to believe.

Mother nature

Your hostess was born in San Francisco and came to the city as a child, now she’s a North Londoner through and through. She and her family love living so close to Hampstead Heath, indeed, she’s out there every day, seeking inspiration for her first novel.

The magic happens

At over ninety feet in length, the garden of Lady Somerset Road is exceptionally large and very beautiful – with gnarled trees, delicate flowers and even a trampoline. Picnic on the lawn or at the table on the terrace, and then, when raindrops begin to patter, retreat to the enormous kitchen diner, where you’ll find cushioned benches, and a very unique papier mache mermaid.

The sitting room is both elegant and eclectic, with its mixture of artwork, books and gorgeously patterned rugs and throws, and if you want to escape the hum of the TV, there’s a further drawing room up on the first floor. This room converts to a double bedroom, should you need it, and along the corridor there’s a bright family bathroom.

Kids and teens will love the two acid-bright single bedrooms, one in yellow and one in green, so leave them to enjoy themselves and retreat to the master bedroom. The ensuite’s clean and modern, and next door, the kingsized bed is resplendent in crisp white linen.

Back to reality

Take a trip around Kenwood House, amble over to Hampstead or stay and enjoy Tufnell Park’s cafes and corner shops. Del Park serves some of the finest tapas this side of San Sebastian, while The Bull and Last is widely acclaimed as one of the finest gastropubs in the UK. Or, if you want to hit the town, jump on the tube. The ride from Tufnell Park to Leicester Square takes around fifteen minutes.
