Wunderkammer Studios aren’t usually known for space and elegance – and that’s not the only thing that makes East 10th Street Studio unique. Up a flight of stairs in a walk-up on a leafy street, its powder blue walls, ornate cornices, and pair of decorative marble fireplaces create a certain 19th-century feel. Packed with artwork, cameos and gilded mirrors, this studio is an apartment-sized curiosity cabinet – or Wunderkammer, if you prefer exotic words for exotic things. Shells and starfish collected from beaches are displayed on the mantel, and there are stacks of books about art and the history of New York City. The bed in the master bedroom is a Ligne Roset convertible sofa bed, and your host swears by it. But our favourite furnishings are the two antique armchairs by the windows nearest the street. The kitchen space suffices for basic meals – there’s an oven, microwave and a mini-refrigerator.
