Tanglewood House

Delancey, Hudson Valley

Open season

The Catskills draws fresh-air seekers and active urbanites all year round. And it’s in quiet Delancey that you’ll find Tanglewood House behind a row of evergreens. Inside, an intriguing collection of taxidermy, grand antlers and other hunting trophies speak of the region’s sporting personality. And in the garden, you might feel like running wild yourself. The private pond comes with its own canoe and the views from the back porch stretch far away. Wild deer and porcupines have been known to wonder by.

A ten-minute drive will take you to Delhi’s renowned antique stores, or visit Hobart, half an hour east, now known as the ‘Bookstore Village of the Catskills’. For more active pursuits, make the hours’ trip during winter out to Plattekill Mountain, and join skiers and boarders in search of fresh powder. Or, a little closer to home lays verdant Table Rock with its cooling watering holes. Either way, we recommend heading home via Table on Ten in Bloomville for a welcome return to community life – recently featured in The New York Times, its locally sourced dishes, open workshops and curated microshop come highly recommended.

The chase

Escape the claws of the city and head north to calmer plains – just three hours’ drive away are landscapes untroubled. And in the Catskills’s wilder parts, there’s endless space to roam, ramble – or just relax. You’ll need your own car to reach Tanglewood House, which is set within the forest.

A picture of tradition from the outside – stone steps lead up to timber walls – this home’s interiors hold plenty of surprises. From the antlers towering above the master ensuite’s lavatory, to the children’s bunk beds resembling a secret cabin, it seems the odd and the curious are both fair game.

Enter through the open sitting room, where the elegant wood panels and grand piano, adorned with a collection of old bee hives and birds’ nests, might encourage you to linger. Deep chalky-hued walls and wildly patterned wallpaper lead through to the kitchen’s wood countertop, and the dramatic bedrooms upstairs. The master bedroom is this home’s trophy piece – moodily dramatic with a heavy wooden chest, thick woven throws and a multi-stone tiled shower in the ensuite. But for all this home’s quirks, there’s a grand stone firepit in the sprawling front garden: so you needn’t forego toasting s’mores (for the uninitiated, that’s a marshmallow and biscuit sandwich).
