Circulate and restore
Venice is home to LA’s forward-thinking artists, designers and creators – no doubt, they’ve unified here for the soul-sustaining vitality of the sun and Pacific Ocean. And no surprise either that such a well-balanced home, magnificently melding form and function, harmoniously at one with the environment it breathes in, has come into being here. Like a four-petalled lotus, McKinley Avenue’s quarters link inner and outer: you’ll ‘oooh’, ‘ahhh’ and maybe even ‘ohm’, no matter which path you take.
Your host is the clear-minded life force of his home. His meditations on design are manifested in the specialized, environmentally-friendly materials throughout. At one with their universe, he and his photographer spouse enjoy the simple pleasures of a relaxing hot tub evening under the stars.
Deconstruct to rebuild
Once you enter through the main gate, the superficial lines of interior and exterior dissolve. Reach the centre and discover a pensive lap pool, free from chemicals to keep it pure, its flow as unblocked as your qi after a dip. Comprised of four pods, all connected by walkways, the floors are moulded of custom concrete, the walls of sustainable reclaimed wood. Natural ventilation allows gentle breezes to whisper throughout and, ingeniously, embedded water pipes in the walls and floors collect heat during the day and radiate restorative warmth at night. The gathering areas have retractable walls and one has a built-in projector and seating in case a screening is in order. Ascend to the master bedroom where floor-to-ceiling glass is a masterstroke of conceptual unity – a nirvana of fantastic views and total privacy are all yours.
