Bless the fates, for they have led you to this, a home of spirit and soul. The colours are rich, the shapes graphic and bold. There’s drama here, undoubtedly, and yet a lilting sweetness. A harp, a portrait, even a rocking horse – much of the furniture is vintage or reclaimed, and everywhere, there is a story. When the curtain falls, Shepherd’s Bush is a peacefully residential part of town, a bus ride from Kensington’s museums, and close to one of the largest shopping centres in Europe. And when the day is done, return home, and slip between our crisp white sheets. Forget nessun dorma. All shall sleep deep tonight.
Your hosts are a documentary maker and a barrister. Opera lovers both, they and their three young children take it in turns at the piano. She’s Argentinian, and she rescued and restored the hand painted tiles you’ll see all around their home.
A big production
There are three sitting rooms – the first, on the ground floor, is resplendent in darkest cherry, and its parquet floor flows though into the generously-proportioned dining room. There’s a games room in the basement, filled with toys to occupy the little ones while grownups retreat to the first floor, where the walls are fir tree-green and the shelves loaded with books. There’s a piano, a harp and a pretty iron fireplace, and those who find themselves enslaved to the moving image will be pleased by the absence of a TV.
All four bedrooms are charmingly tranquil– but this home’s true originality is asserted in its bathrooms. Peacocks, thistles and flowers intertwine around free-standing baths and powerful showers, ready to be doused in the foam from our delicious White Company toiletries.
On a high note
You’re not far from Kensington High Street, leading through to the museums, to Kensington Gardens and on across to Harrods and Knightsbridge. Closer to home, Westfield is jammed with shops, cafes, restaurants and even a multiplex cinema, while antiques lovers will be eagerly anticipating a morning at Portobello Road Market. All this, and the tube from Shepherd’s Bush to Oxford Circus takes a little over ten minutes.
There's no storage space in the second single bedroom, so a temporary wardrobe will be set up for your stay.
