Barefoot in the park The Upper West Side is the home of New York’s intelligentsia, where professors and writers frequent bookstores by day and trade their elbow patches for formalwear for the symphony at Lincoln Center at night. But the heart of the Upper West Side is Central Park, where the city goes to play, picnic, and listen to Shakespearean soliloquies in summer. At once urban and tranquil, this two bedroom apartment offers easy access to the green expanse. Picture perfect Your hosts chose their home for the light that pours in by day. Her photographs, which reflect fragments of the city, accent the clean lines of the modernist space, which offers a Bauhaus minimalism enlivened with imaginative flashes of colour. Head space Begin the day with a coffee sipped on the balcony, which lies beyond the living area. This master bedroom double as a study, the bookshelves filled with photography books and classic novels form a windowed alcove. And a desk completes the perfect nook for jotting down ideas after a walk around the Central Park reservoir – Jackie O’s daily pastime, followed, for her, by a lunch of oysters and champagne. The second bedroom is a cleverly secluded nest with a soft rug and subway-inspired art. During the day, the open-plan living room floods with light let in by generous windows. Two cushy sofas are the ideal landing pad for kicking off your sandals and settling in for a novel after wandering the boutiques of the Upper West Side. Prepare a light supper in the sleek refurbished kitchen or uncork a bottle of wine as you ready yourself for a performance of Swan Lake. Bagels and Bookshops The avenues of the Upper West Side are a mecca for indie shops, wine bars and jazz music. Eco-tours are an easy way to explore the gardens of Central Park, and the Whitney, Guggenheim and Metropolitan museums are only a walk across its meadows. When the Ramble goes dark or a rainy day impedes outdoor fun, the Met Opera, the New York City Ballet, the Museum of Natural History and a bagel and lox from Zabar’s are within easy reach.
