Eye of the beholder
‘Beauty,’ writes Stendhal, ‘is the promise of happiness.’ And you assuredly won’t find a happier home than this. Appointed in the best Parisian taste, Oakley Street III is utterly exquisite. Each of its five floors, every last cushion, cornice and sparkling chandelier, has been groomed and polished to graceful ends. Here, elegance is almost an art form, while the art itself is cheeky and chic by turns. Sofas blush in the gorgeous sitting room, and you won’t find a more marvellous nursery outside the pages of an interiors magazine. Of course, your location is a stunner too: the ever-handsome heart of Chelsea.
Your hosts are a young French couple with a baby. And it’s fair to say their London maison isn’t lacking for Gallic flair either.
Hey, good looking
Yes, you’ve five sumptuous floors to feast your eyes on – that is, if anyone can look past the beautiful sitting room. Here, the ceilings are high, the fireplaces handsome and, through period windows, Chelsea bustles away below. Nestle into a sofa with an art tome, or take yourself off to the bright, attractive kitchen. No chef will lack for inspiration, or space, while the delightful dining room answers any appetite for beauty. Stunningly Chinese in style, you’ve some absorbing artwork, shelves abrim with trinkets and teacups, and no less than two chic tables.
Dessert? Take it in the green and lovingly groomed garden – or, if the day draws late, the elegant garden room. Upstairs, artwork, as well as furniture antique and modern, come together in the master, while a pop art Peter Sellers stares across an exquisite ensuite. You’ve also an eastern-tinged double with ensuite, a heart-tuggingly gorgeous child’s bedroom and a wondrously arty study with a sofabed.
Glamour for more
Should all that beauty make you woozy, don’t worry. The King’s Road is within a few footsteps, and once there you’ve all the fashions, fine wines and artisan coffee you could wish for. Or, turn the other way for Albert Bridge and the apple-green grass of Battersea Park. You’re close to the museums of South Kensington, the shops of Knightsbridge and, needless to say, the West End. You can be at Oxford Circus in just twelve minutes from Sloane Square.
