Clad in classic red brick, Oakwood Court 3 bespeaks confidence, class and grandeur. In such a mansion block would Victorian lips have sipped afternoon tea, or ladies with parasols repaired to the park for air and exercise. And it remains a home of handsome refinement. Be delighted by its beautiful plasterwork, shapely chandeliers and window boxes in riotous bloom. There’s a Gustavian splendour to the kitchen, all gleaming glassware and cutlery, while the garden is abuzz with gentlemanly bees. It’s hard to find a more elegant green space than Holland Park, and as for Kensington’s shops, they’re just as close, and chic, as ever.
Height of good taste
Your hosts are a family of five with French and German roots and they all speak three languages apiece. She works in the classical music industry, and her musical daughter may just follow in her footsteps.
Class is permanent
This ground floor apartment has a distinctly elevated sense of style. The sitting room boasts some sumptuous touches, from a sparkly chandelier to classical plasterwork and a cluster of absorbing objets d’art. Be seated with a well-chosen book, or glide through to the kitchen. Bright and brilliantly modern, there’s all the space needed to whip up a feast for all to share your own dining room. There’s a grandeur to each candlestick and sconce, to the roaring fire and the sophisticated table set for the family. As for desert, there’s the lovely decked garden in which to sit back and breathe the fresh, leafy air.
The bedrooms are each beautifully decorated. There are two girl’s bedrooms, one sweetly wallpapered in flowers, the other all buttery yellow and daintily shuttered windows. The boy’s single is smart, while the master is spacious, arty and stylish. Both the family bathroom and the shower room are a-brim with our White Company goodies.
Spot some peacocks prancing in this home, there are even more out in Holland Park. One of London’s most delightful lungs, nowhere else is an orangery, a Japanese garden and a giant chess set? For shoppers, Kensington High Street has plenty to recommend it, while Notting Hill has boutiques and cafes of the coolest sort. The tube from Holland Park to Oxford Circus takes just ten minutes.
