A bend in the river
Welcome to South Africa. Or, should we say, Notting Hill. Just a gazelle’s bound from Portobello Road, here’s a home with all the warmth of the whispering veldt in high summer. Earthy shades, splashes of sunshine and soulful African art lend an exotic allure, while few homes are as handsomely masculine. With its cow-hide rug, outré tusks and an aluminium finish dining table, even the butchest of bachelors can lounge in luxury. Brightly walled with bamboo, the roof terrace is an enticing eyrie, while Notting Hill, of course, never stops being delightful.
In the heart of the country
Your South African host loves to travel. Just back from Moscow, he’s soon nipping off to New York. He can’t get enough of kitesurfing – or collecting cool art.
Wedged between Westbourne Grove and Portobello Road, this home is simply where it’s at. Hop up to the second floor of this pretty period townhouse and acquaint yourself with the sitting room, a treasury of interesting items. A map of Africa adorns the wall, while a cow-hide rug, storied trunk and exotic artwork speak further of your host’s roots. Nestle into the sofa for a closer look, or make your way over to the rugged dining table. Wooden, with an aluminium finish, six can sit and eat something suitably manly cooked up in the smart kitchen.
You’ve a sweet single bedroom hung with a South African print, while Muhammed Ali commands the bright, modern bathroom. The master is exotically furnished, with rough-hewn bedside lamps of wood, artwork and even a Nelson Mandela quote. But before you slide into slumber, sidle onto the spacious roof terrace for a Notting Hill nightcap.
You could scarcely be closer to Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill’s designer drag lined with chic boutiques and choice eateries. As well as the antique market, Portobello Road offers delis, cafes and sweet pastel houses to gaze on. Visit the Museum of Brands, saunter in Kensington Gardens or swoop into town. The tube from Notting Hill Gate to Oxford Circus takes only eight minutes.
