Grain of truth Just a street from the Champs Elysées, Rue Penthièvre is a branch of Parisian history. Built in 1860, you can still trace your fingers across original beams despite its recent pruning. And with animal prints and intricately-carved wooden furniture, the past and the present combine as effortlessly as oak and mistletoe. Those who’ve come to the city for its art will find themselves surrounded by galleries, but when your bones grow weary you’ll be just as content enjoying the views beyond the sitting room’s boisterous windowsills from the comfort of the plump leather sofa. Top of the tree Your hosts work in digital communication and split their time between Paris and London. Your hostess’ favourite pastime is cooking, and her table is accustomed to bearing deliciously exotic dishes from further afield. Polished performance As the tallest oaks tower above the city, so too will you from this colourful fifth floor apartment, where the bathroom’s sky-blue walls are sure to rejuvenate. At once airy and cosy, the sitting room’s windows are shaded not by leaves but by stripes of sunshine-yellow, while inside the furniture is a mix of the classical and the avant-garde and the kitchen is brand new. And when the sun dips beneath the lowest bough, there’s a pretty double bedroom and a bright single where you can sleep amidst the knots and whorls of ancient timber.
