Room to bloom
Sitting in 90 acres of woodland, Willow Pond has breathtaking private grounds. But the home itself (tall, broad and timber-built) is the biggest attraction. It’s architecturally striking: a double-height wall of windows gives the sitting room an indoor-outdoor flow, while the wooden-beam skeleton shows itself at interesting angles in every room. Round the back is a decked veranda, which leads down (via a grassy slope) to the private pond. Fringed by trees, it’s a scenic spot for a walk, or canoeing—even a swim.
For hiking, there’s no better place to begin than your back garden. You can also head to Red Hook centre (an eight-minute drive) for more walking trails, as well as restaurants and farmers’ markets. To the south is the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, a museum of antique cars and aircraft from World War I and the Golden Age. No less historic is Poets’ Walk Park, a riverside idyll said to have inspired 19th-century Romantic writers. The towns of Milan, Tivoli and Rhinebeck are all within twenty minutes’ drive, and equally worth visiting for their shops and restaurants.
How to get there
Willow Pond is around a two-hour drive north from New York City. You’ll need a car to get to Red Hook, as well as the other towns and attractions nearby.
The scale of Willow Pond will only really dawn on you as you walk up the slate path to the front door. You enter into the grand open-plan living area – it has double-height beamed ceilings, a log fireplace, and wall-to-wall windows that look out across the grounds and the private pond. There’s a cluster of modern sofas on the right, and on the left is the dining table for ten. Behind and left, white lacquered worktops stand out in the wood-panelled kitchen.
Slide apart the glass doors to reach the decking and garden, or take a left for the children’s playroom. To the right is the second sitting room (with a corner sofa and wall-mounted TV), and beyond is the guest bedroom, which has a Murphy bed and ensuite. Upstairs there’s a king-size master bedroom and ensuite, and down the hall are two doubles – one with a purple canopy (ideal for kids), the other with a small double bed.
This home has a tranquil pond in the backyard perfect for swimming and canoeing.
The third bedroom currently has a bed suitable for one child, but will be replaced with a double bed.
The fourth bedroom with ensuite bathroom has a murphy bed. Please let our reservations team know, if you would like it made up for your stay.
