Sometimes, to see the whole picture, you need to step out of the frame. But we’ll make it worth your while. Tucked off Putney High Street is a secret, a home hidden by gates and doors. And on the inside, you’ll be astounded. There’s the cool palette, the clusters of antiques, the clean lines that give way to swooping curves. Every room is a discovery, whether it’s the stylish master, the skylit dining room or the balcony that glows with sunset. We’ll leave the exploring up to you – but be sure not to miss the laid-back terrace or, for that matter, the ensuite steam rooms…
Your hosts are a young couple from South Africa. She is a jewellery designer; he owns a construction company and transformed this home from wreck into wonder.
Just getting to this home is fun – past a hidden gate and through a sequence of doors. You’ll leave the bustle of Putney High Street well and truly behind to boot. Inside, we’re sure the entrance hall will induce a few gasps, thanks to its dazzling skylights, trendy bare bricks and blue marbled stairs. You’ll see the dining table swimming in a pool of light, while the kitchen is awash with azures, whites and welcoming greys. Once you’ve whipped up something wonderful, flow into the exciting sitting room. Here you’ve antique trunks, futuristic lighting and all manner of curiosities little and large. Take a breathless seat on one of two sofas, or be lured onto the terrace for a barbecue and a long glass of something icy. The master suite makes a stunning design statement, with its swirling wallpaper, indulgent steam shower and sprawling king bed. For all that, there’s an even better view to be had on the romantic balcony. You’ve also a modern bathroom and an elegantly quaint double paired with a fine ensuite.
Take a turn around the shops and eateries of Putney High Street, or step across the bridge into leafy Fulham. Here you’ve waterside pubs, lazy parks and, before long, the chic boutiques and modern galleries of Chelsea. You can stroll along the towpath, discover the villagey lanes of Barnes or explore the West End. The tube from East Putney to Oxford Circus takes under half an hour.
