Breaking the mould Pour yourself into Avenue de la République, an apartment as capacious as it is lovely. There’s a delicate lustre to this home, with its raw silk drapes, original parquet floors and antique wood, and a golden glaze to the buddhas which sit so contentedly upon the shelves. The Canal Saint-Martin is almost on your doorstep, so when the sun’s out pack a picnic and join the rest of Paris upon its banks. Or, wend your way from bar to café until you reach the grandeur of Le Marais, a place much beloved by your hosts. Potted history Your hostess makes ceramics – and not only is her home dotted with her creations, there’s a kiln in her bedroom. She and your host have lived all around the world, and they’ve furnished Avenue de la République with treasures from Singapore, London and Laos. Form and function With its spacious proportions and intricate plasterwork, this is every inch the Parisian apartment. Yet the Orient is here too, in the hand-woven rugs, the books that fill the cases, and the terracotta-hued furnishings and sweet boxes inlaid with feathery ferns and flowers. The sitting room has been hung with expressive oil paintings, with seating either at the dining table or upon a couch of chocolatey leather, and there are more perches in the kitchen. Both bedrooms are doubles, with walls of alabaster white, and the master is especially pleasant with honeyed woods and two windows looking out onto curling wrought iron.
