If anywhere were to tempt the gods down from Mount Olympus, it would be Rutland Gate. Striking sculptures, exquisite artworks and carefully wrought textiles are all perfumed with the scent of fresh lavender, its pale rooms airy and captivating. In fact, Rutland Gate is mere steps from Hyde Park, and a short walk from the reservoir of human knowledge that is Exhibition Road. And if you’re searching for your muse, try the Serpentine Gallery, mere steps from your front door.
Your hostess has roots in Mykonos, and has lived in both London and New York. Her partner, your host, has recently taken up painting, and together they’ve filled their home with books, canvases and statuary.
Philosophy of learning
Up on the fifth floor, you may be minutes from the bustle of Harrods but you’d never know it. The architecture’s neoclassical, with grand windows affording beautiful views out over the city. Antique rugs and fifties furniture fill the spacious sitting room, its TV and sound system cleverly concealed until you need them.
And next door there’s dining space for six, with further seating at the modern, white kitchen’s glass-topped table. There are two bedrooms, a sweet single with its own bathroom and a pair of bevelled mirrors, and the master bedroom – furnished in oatmeal and cream, its ensuite complete with a Jacuzzi and a walk-in shower.
Your hosts' cleaner will come on Tuesday afternoons from 1pm - 5pm.
There is no way to control the temperature from within the flat as it is communal heating, which is on from October - May.
