Room at the top
If bigger is better, here’s a home which may just be the best. Tucked away from the fray in a quiet Clerkenwell lane, this converted warehouse will send your spirits soaring off towards its dizzying ceilings. But size isn’t the only thing that’s off the scale. Sublimely stylish at every turn, clean lines combine with eclectic elements, from a vintage drinks trolley to a Swarovski-studded claw candlestick. The terrace sits in perfect privacy, and then there’s the sun-soaked silence of the sitting room with its awesome windows. Best of all, Clerkenwell is a foodie mecca, with some of the tastiest restaurants in town.
Hailing from a small town in rural Staffordshire, your host landed in London seeking concrete and excitement. Having built a successful career in finance, he spends his spare time travelling or honing his DJ skills by spinning his exhaustive record collection.
For its all its size, this is a home of considerable cosiness. Huge windows send shafts of daylight over the sitting room’s dark wooden floor, characterful flourishes and the huge photograph dominating the far wall. A sound system with two sizeable speakers waits at your service, so select something suitably chill in vinyl and get laidback on the lush white sofa. The wooden dining table seats six, and you’ll find the coolly minimalist kitchen perfect for prepping that scrummy supper.
You’ve a barbeque complete with wooden table and chairs on the terrace, which peeps languidly through the master bedroom’s big windows. The superking bed slouches low to the wooden floors in this soothingly uncluttered space, while its ensuite is glossily modern yet with a funky vintage cabinet. You’ve a shower room impeccably tiled in white and elegantly set off with natural stone, and a second double bedroom next door.
St John’s Lane is so quiet, you might only hear the rumble of your stomach. But not for long, for Clerkenwell is arguably London’s go-to gastronomic quarter. You’ve St John’s, with its renowned nose-to-tail dining, Club Gascon’s frankly fabulous French fare (both are Michelin-starred) as well as Spanish/Moroccan eatery Moro. Cultural hub the Barbican is just around the corner, and you’re not too far from the South Bank’s fancy theatres and galleries. The tube from Chancery Lane to Oxford Circus takes a mere four minutes.
