How does this sound: 200 feet of private, sandy beachfront on Jamaica’s fabled northern coast? That’s what awaits at Canoe Cove – well, that and enormous gardens, canoes (of course), paddleboards, a putting green, a tennis court, a basketball hoop, a hot tub and an Olympic-sized pool, the latter flanked by floating daybeds and sun loungers, plus a colossal thatched gazebo that enables outdoor dining or lounging.

Actually, there’s more – those are just the al fresco perks, along with glorious sunsets and sea views. Enter the two-floor villa and more premium amenities materialise. A terrific little gym. A home cinema system. And, typical of the Caribbean, an open-plan ‘great room’ which incorporates the living room and dining table below high, stained wood ceilings, silken wood floors. As for the seven bedroom suites, these are of a luxury-hotel standard and spread across both floors. Six have king-sized mattresses, private terraces or balconies and cavernous bathtubs, with the last a four-person children’s room.

That helps Canoe Cave to work really well for families, as does its superb and friendly private staff – including a private chef, housekeepers and a butler yet to find a question he can’t answer. Equally pleasing are the villa’s gentle reminders that luxury can be sustainable. That gazebo’s supports are purloined telephone poles, for instance, while homegrown orchids adorn most rooms.
