Sunset Beach is that rarest of things on St John: a villa that’s set right on the beach. In this case, a pebbly, coral-stone southern shore, with an adjacent sandy area and then a cute cove whose Caribbean Sea reef is ripe for snorkelling.

There’s no need to dispense with swimming costumes after strolling the few metres home, either. The turquoise-themed deck on Sunset Beach’s lower floor hosts its large pool (and a bar area and barbecue) while, upstairs, a long, covered veranda includes a hot tub and receives refreshing breezes. It’s from up there that guests can best admire the daily, delightful sunsets which lend this villa its name.

Inside, still on the upper floor, an open-plan ‘great room’ contains the expansive, custom-built kitchen, a dining table and bright-coloured sofas so everyone can stay connected and comfortable. Two bedrooms are also on this floor, found in separate cabanas offering exterior doors, with the other pair downstairs – one with direct pool access, and the other a twin room intended for kids. All are air-conditioned, ensuite, equally sized and lined by characterful antiques, and all let you drift off listening to the waves rolling in.

Though Devers Bay is a largely residential peninsula, you’re still only an easy drive from Cruz Bay’s supermarkets, shops and restaurants.
