Chosen by TheTimes as one of '30 places to stay in Provence, this is a dramatic and unique villa built into the rocks below the historic ruins of Chateau les Baux. Originally a roman villa, La Roche des Alpilles has been refurbished to an excellent standard with every modern amenity.
The villa features a kidney shaped infinity pool with masses of lounging room around it, offering dramatic views across the beautiful Provencal countryside. A choice of two terraces provide lovely alfresco dining and lounging options and include a summer kitchen and an outdoor fire pit so you can sit out and enjoy the views well into the evening as the sun sets over the plains and the lights begin to twinkle in the surrounding villages. It is possible to walk up the hill to Les Baux de Provence with its pedestrian cobblestone streets winding their way up to the ruins of the monastery, but it is a steep climb. As a reward, you will find great little restaurants with fabulous views, some stretching as far as the Mediterranean - and it is easier getting back home!
A short drive takes you to the heart of St Remy, where you can easily do your daily shopping and eat out in one of the many excellent local restaurants. There is an extensive market every Wednesday and a produce market on Saturday. Awe-inspiring Roman buildings and ruins are scattered everywhere in this Ancient Roman Province: the impressive triple-tiered aqueduct of the Pont du Gard and the massive arena in Arles are certainly worth a visit. Further west, under an hour's drive from this villa, is the Camargue National Park, a fascinating wetland known for its pink flamingos, fighting bulls and wild horses, and which offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and horse-riding.
Included: 3 hours maid service on Saturdays only. WiFi internet. Pool towels.
