Designed for active families, Los Naranjos 11 manages to be comfortable and very cool all at once. Part of La Romana’s extensive Casa de Campo resort, its two modern buildings (each lent a traditional, thatched look) surround the central courtyard and water feature. Awaiting inside is an open-plan lounge and the dining room, plus a kitchen with every appliance you’ll ever need and five bedrooms. Two of those are king-sized master suites which interconnect to the next-door room so parents can check on children.

Decorated with a blend of dark-wood elegance and homely Caribbean colours, Sanctuario spills outside to outdoor dining and sofa areas, some below a shady gazebo. Neighbouring them is the long heated pool, and its row of chaise longues, plus the outdoor shower, a small playground for kids and palm-lined lawns on which they can play. You get a barbecue, too, but cooking isn’t mandatory: the villa’s staff includes a cook alongside its housekeeper, butler and guard.

Surrounding Casa de Campo contributes various restaurant options, too, some of them located amid a 16th century-style Italian village. Elsewhere beckon three championship golf courses (including legendary Teeth of the Dog), a tennis academy and various watersports on private Minitas Beach, its white sand close to Los Naranjos 11. Then there’s the sumptuous spa, the yoga and Zumba classes, the yachts to rent, the boat excursions to paradise islands - plenty to keep everyone in the group more than happy.
