Rose, sage, goldenrod, heather - all the lush, growing things that lend the painter’s palette its pigments are in bloom in this four bedroom, two and a half bathroom Gramercy town home. A growing place, a fertile urban plot whereon to nurture and be nurtured. If the notional garden does not move you, perhaps a private terrace swathed in creeping evergreen or a tree-lined rooftop deck that unfolds above will.
Your hosts have roots in Europe, but have now made their way New York City. A band of jetsetters, they scoop up their seedlings for trade wind journeys as often as time allows. Don’t be fooled by their tumbleweed ways: whether entertaining or soaking up sunlit sights, they adore the big city they call home.
Gild the lily
The master bedroom recalls a country bower enclosed in exposed brick. An elegant four-poster bed and varnished furnishings contrast a delicate sage palette. The master washroom is sown in blue, from the sapphire sink to the periwinkle walls and the cyan shower. Down the hall, a profusion of lavender, sky-blue, and rose hues marks the domain of tender saplings.
From the dining chairs to a potted topiary and the bottle-green accents, the greatroom upstairs is given over to green. The centrepiece steel and white kitchen is an ultra-modern, functional masterpiece - it’s enviably well stocked, thrilling even the most discerning chef de cuisine. Trail the natural wood stairs up to the top floor, where another bedroom awaits; here, knotty, wide-planked wood floors - think beach cottage back porch - lead out onto the rooftop terrace, a sunflower’s delight.
Gramercy is a quiet, verdant, old-world slice of New York City life where the conditions are just right for a gentle retreat after bustling city days. For local connections afield, the 6 train couldn’t be more accessible.
