Dagea is a classic Puglian stone villa, and a decidedly cool one at that. Olive-green shutters add a tasteful splash of colour to its exterior; inside, below vaulted ceilings, are pieces of designer furniture, giant plasma-screen TVs and a kitchen with blonde-wood cabinetry. Alabaster walls and picture windows ensure brightness, while high-end tableware amps up the luxurious feel. So do the premium, queen-sized mattresses in the three ensuite bedrooms – all of which have air-conditioning and outdoor access. One enjoys sole dominion over the first floor.

Though there’s an indoor dining room, you may prefer eating on the straw-shaded veranda where flowery plants festoon pillars. To one side is a lounge, and ahead paving-stone lawn footpaths lead to the heated, ten-metre swimming pool, sun deck and wet bar. Aperitivo time? Why not also fire up Dagea’s outdoor stereos, and utilise the pizza oven? Elsewhere around the manicured gardens is an exercise area with Technogym equipment, and lots of spots to sit, read, stretch or meditate. Breezes blow in from the visible ocean, and time moves wonderfully slowly.

A seven-minute stroll away is the Pettolecchia il Lido beach club, to whose four-poster sun beds and sandy shore you have complimentary access. Bicycles are provided should you prefer to pedal there. Elsewhere in the vicinity are family-run vineyards, an 18-hole coastal golf course, Alberobello’s historic trulli buildings and the bewitching ‘white city’ of Ostuni.
