Nag Shampa is a serene eight-bed villa where each guest has plenty of privacy and tranquillity, alongside plentiful facilities focused on wellness. Located near Ubud in the peaceful village of Taro, where ancient rhythms of prayer and ceremony still endure, it blends traditional Indonesian architecture with contemporary, open-plan cool. Immediately calming, the estate – and it truly is an estate – is idyllically ringed by misty mountains.

Three impressive buildings erected in the vernacular Joglo-style, under pointy roofs, respectively house the master suite – home to a pool, private-dining balé (gazebo) and spa-like bathroom – a lounge and a dining room. Two more, mirror-image Joglos house another four luxurious ensuite bedrooms, while a trio of freestanding Pool Villas afford equal warmth and style: timber, rugs and so much space. The fifth and main swimming pool flanks a yoga hut; close to that is the ‘Relaxation Pavilion’, where massage beds overlook emerald-green rice terraces. A distant river is invisible but audible, allowing you to enjoy restful naps to the soothing sound of flowing water.

In all, there’s over one hectare to explore. Parts of that host organic orchards and vegetable gardens which power much of the chef’s daily menus: a mix of local and international fare, and wholly adaptable. Generally, Nag Shampa’s full-time staff will look after you as much or as little as you like. That includes assisting with trips to Ubud or surrounding temples, and arranging visiting therapists for an afternoon of pampering.
