Villa Marcela contains everything a family or group of friends could need. Nestled between natural boulders on the hillside above Coral Bay, it first benefits from all the gated Samujana estate’s facilities. Its shared tennis court is floodlit to enable all-day play, while a concierge can arrange trips to canopy zip-lines, elephant sanctuaries or easy waterfall hikes. Airport transfers are provided, and Choeng Mon’s endearing sandy beach – quieter than other, broader island shores and fringed by seafood shacks – is in easy walking distance.

When you return, the villa’s dedicated, live-in staff will tend to your every whim. That includes a chef; breakfast is complimentary, and other meals can be ordered off his daily menu.

Perhaps you’ll devour them on a sun deck beside the large infinity pool, enjoying the sumptuous sea views towards small islands. Among other communal areas are a TV room whose projector and large screen enables popcorn-powered movie nights, a roof terrace with sunsets in mind, and an open-plan, indoor/outdoor lounge offering defined areas for dining, cooking and horizontal lounging.

Just as crisply decorated and faintly minimal are the four bedrooms. All are large, double-bedded and ensuite, and all have rainfall showers and private terraces. Adjoining the master bedroom is a study which can easily become an additional children's bedroom – ideal when parents need to keep young charges close.
