Tucked between the busy towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum is Akumal, a charming little community that benefits from an idyllic position right on the magnificent Yalku Lagoon. Famous for its wildlife, Akumal means 'Place of the Turtles' and is still a nesting ground for rare turtles to this day. The water of the lagoon is crystal clear and, because of its sheltered position, ideal for lazy snorkelling and swimming. Further along the bay, you can indulge in some water sports or sit at one of the beach bars with a margarita in hand and watch the world go by. Local restaurants provide excellent cuisine that ranges from classic Mexican to French fusion.

Part of the complex is made up of a separate casita or guesthouse. Three further elegant bedrooms with two bathrooms and a separate living room make up a cosy little retreat for the younger travellers or groups who prefer a little more privacy. The casita bedrooms include a king-size bed and two rooms with two double beds. Dominating the front is an infinity pool, al fresco dining area, and numerous little spots where you can simply snooze the afternoon away - what a wonderful way to spend a vacation.
