Guests at St Bernard’s Hill House – actually four roomy pavilions – are literally on top of the world. Whether you’re reading on one of the various verandas, wallowing in the heated infinity pool, indulging in an outdoor shower or sauntering through tropical gardens, the views are spellbinding. From this mighty ridgetop perch, one can see over Long Bay and Smuggler’s Cove’s white-sand shores to tens of lush British and US Virgin Islands scattered around the turquoise ocean. Sunset is predictably magical, too, before thousands of stars appear at night.

Need some shade? The main pavilion hosts a focal ‘great room’ where open, arched doorways welcome in soft breezes. Sofas fan out below a cathedral ceiling here, and entranceways lead on to a well-equipped kitchen and the study. Just outside, a three-sided covered terrace affords numerous sitting options for dinner – and St Bernards comes with its own chef, as well as a housekeeping service. Elsewhere around the gated site is a superb, bamboo-floored gym, plus a 30-foot speedboat, bikes and snorkelling gear that you can borrow.

A master suite and its four-poster bed are found in the main pavilion, with four more ensuite chambers spread around three air-conditioned cottages to provide privacy to groups of couples. Accessed via palm-lined walkways, each has its own blend of soothing Caribbean decor and billowing gauze curtains, as well as wooden decks or tiled terraces. Two additionally provide a kitchenette.
