While ever so slightly Grecian in appearance, with its pillars, balconies, wood accents and muted colours, Villa Royce is truly Caribbean in view. Its long deck – bordering a hot tub and a much bigger pool – looks out over yacht-dotted, coral-flecked Great Cruz Bay with rainbows and distant St Croix often visible.

That’s courtesy of a perch on the Contant Point peninsula, just south of Cruz Bay’s fine restaurants and shopping markets. The North Shore’s series of pristine, perfect beaches begin just beyond (beach towels and chairs are provided), and you’re also very close to the Westin hotel’s spa and private sandy shore. Trade winds wash up the hillside, keeping guests cool in their sea-facing sun loungers, while sizzling snacks on the barbecue grill or relaxing on the numerous outside social terraces.

The large, communal ‘great room’ can also be opened up to allow in breezes and sunshine, or air-conditioned if you prefer. Under vaulted ceilings, this handsome space combines a lounge area and a large dining table with room for everyone. In one corner, the superbly-equipped kitchen includes pine cabinets and an L-shaped island counter lined with teal and gold-leather chairs – meaning whoever’s cooking can socialise while whizzing up something wonderful. Privately spaced out, each of the four air-conditioned ensuite bedrooms has its own ocean-view deck.
