With space for everyone to spread out, townhouses are a great base for families exploring the city. We’ve picked a few of our favourites, all ready for a winter trip to the Big Apple.
West 88th Street, Upper West Side, Manhattan
West 88th Street is a four bed, two bathroom home in the Upper West Side. Entering on the garden level, the master bedroom with an ensuite is on the left, and has a plush queen-size bed. Down the hall you’ll find a pair of bedrooms (one with a queen-size bed and one with bunk beds), an office and a bathroom. Both bedrooms have access to the private back garden.
Climbing the stairs takes you to the sitting room, which is sure to make a lasting impression. You’ll find an assortment of artworks, crisp white walls and several pieces of bold statement furniture. Just beyond the sitting room, there's another bedroom with a twin-size bed with trundle. Make a left from the landing to find the compact galley kitchen and dining room. In the latter, you'll find a white dining table and copper pipe shelving.
East 7th Street III, East Village, Manhattan
East 7th Street III is a three bedroom, three bathroom home in the East Village. The open-plan living room has a sitting area with a thick red rug and elegant square fireplace, a stylish white kitchen and a dining space seating six. In the master bedroom there’s a wood-framed king bed, exposed ceiling beams and an ensuite with a separate tub and shower. The East Village is bursting with cocktail spots and trendy diners. A few blocks to the south is the thought-provoking Tenement Museum, where tour guides explain the impoverished beginnings of this now unavoidably hip patch of Manhattan. Astor Place subway station is around a five-minute walk away.
East 74th Street Townhouse, New York
East 74th Street Townhouse is a five bedroom, five bathroom home on the Upper East Side. From the sky-blue sitting room, with its charming original details and exotic accessories, to the strikingly papered, antique-filled dining room, this home’s living areas feel very grand. The master bedroom is more impressive still – it has a curtained four-poster bed, a classic sitting area and a generous ensuite with a sunken bathtub. And outside there’s an ivied courtyard garden and a roof terrace. Close to Central Park, you’ll find many restaurants, bars and museums nearby. It’s a three-minute walk to the subway at 77th Street.
Charles Street, West Village, Manhattan
Charles Street is a four bedroom, three bathroom home in the West Village. With its glossy granite kitchen (just across from which there’s a dining table to seat eight) and contemporary sitting area, this home’s open-plan living area feels very smart. What’s more, its dramatic spiral staircase leads up to a lovely roof terrace. Back inside, the four bedrooms are all charmingly done, with elegant furnishings and nicely restored original details. The West Village itself is full of shops, bars and restaurants, and you’re also quite close to the High Line here. The subway at 14th Street is a five-minute walk away.
This home is equipped with outrageously comfortable mattresses and pillows from Casper, a company re-imagining sleep from the ground up.
