Explore Canal Saint-Martin

If you’re searching for something a little way off the tourist trail, or hoping to drift away from the city’s crowded boulevards, then you might find paradise in Canal Saint-Martin.

Stretched along a waterway built by Napoleon I, Canal Saint-Martin has undergone an enormous transformation in the past few decades, becoming the centre of Paris’ bohemian scene.

It hasn’t lost its cosmopolitan, shabby-chic feel, and is a hub for Paris’ creatives. You’ll find some of the city’s best art and design shops nearby.

Streets and alleyways branch away from the canal route, each one lined with boutiques, artisan bakeries and coffee shops. Wherever you are, a cool bière or fortifying apéritif isn’t far away.

Iconic cast iron bridges arch over the canal. On warm summer weekends, expect to see parcels of pâté and baguettes unwrapped and bottles of wine uncorked as locals flock to picnic on the banks.
