Explore Montmartre – South Pigalle

Montmartre has long been an artist’s haven, with Dalí, Picasso and Van Gogh having lived in the area. Today, South Pigalle is attracting the modern creative classes, thanks to the vibrant nightlife and contemporary café culture.

Forget the Champs-Élysées – to get your shopping fix, look no further than Rue des Abbesses. This pretty Parisian street is filled with boutiques, offering everything from shabby-chic to haute couture. The Brocante des Abbesses is worth a visit, you’ll find everything from Art Deco ornaments to delicious hot chocolate at this Sunday street market.

Rue des Martyrs is the hub of South Pigalle’s burgeoning foodie scene, with a great selection of delicatessens, as well as casual and formal dining spots. There’s still something of a village feel here – chain stores are forbidden from setting up shop in the street, and artisanal local businesses have flourished in their absence.

Taking pride of place on the butte Montmartre, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica is (quite literally) one of Paris’ highlights, providing a spectacular vista of the city. The interior of the basilica is equally stunning, with golden mosaics and murals lining the walls.
