History & culture
When it comes to history and culture, St Thomas does not disappoint. With a colourful pirate-filled past, this tiny little island was first ‘discovered’ by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Originally populated by indigenous tribes, the island’s conveniently-sheltered bays were frequented by pirates and buccaneers, long before the Europeans decided to settle there.
Eventually, St Thomas was colonised by the Dutch, before changing hands between the Western powers: being taken over by Denmark, then Britain and finally America. The sheer variety of its past gives St Thomas’s history a rich and textured quality, and consequently, the town is home to a diverse range of historical sites. Such as Blackbeard’s Castle, the second-oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere and the childhood home of Camille Pissarro, a famous French Impressionist.
Sand, sea & snorkelling
Lauded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of the Caribbean, Magen’s Bay is well worth a visit. Stretching along the north coast, this mile-long beach is characterised by pristine white sand and gentle waves - perfect for a family beach day. If you’re looking for a quieter spot or want to catch some waves, then Hull Bay Beach is a great option. A favourite with local surfers and residents, this tranquil little beach is the perfect spot for a laidback afternoon.
If you’re into snorkelling, then a trip below the waves at St Thomas will not disappoint. Teaming with tropical fish, marine animals and colourful coral, the ocean encircling the island offers amazing year-round snorkelling. What’s more, with Coral World Ocean Park right on your doorstep there’ll be plenty of chances for all the family to get out and explore the magical underwater world, as well as learn about ocean conservation.
Food & drink
With a cuisine as rich and varied as its history, the dining scene on St Thomas is certain to delight keen foodies. The local dishes are bursting with fragrant spice and fresh flavours and, due to the cosmopolitan nature of the isle, there are plenty of foreign fusions to be found too. Bella Blu is one such spot, with snapper creole, lobster omelettes and coconut shrimp featuring on the menu. What’s more, their bottomless mimosa brunch is the perfect start to the weekend.
Serving up fresh local fish, juicy steaks and an extensive wine menu, Old Stone Farmhouse is a firm favourite with locals and tourist alike. Situated in a restored Danish plantation house, this special spot is also considered to be one of the best examples of classic West Indian architecture on the whole island.
Characterised by a spectacular coastline and a chain of rugged mountains, this 32 square mile island is an adrenaline junkies playground. Take to the mountains and admire the beautiful view of the archipelago from one of many vantage points. Or else mask and fin up and make a foray into the coral reefs - you could come face to face with turtles, dolphins, barracuda and even nurse sharks. If that’s not enough to quench your thirst for adventure, then why not try your hand at parasailing, flyboarding or even sky diving? If it’s an adrenaline rush you’re craving, you’re sure to find it on this little slice of tropical paradise.
