Villa Mariana is both eye-catching – hence an appearance on the US show House Hunters International – and superbly positioned, with legendary Manuel Antonio National Park only ten minutes’ drive away. Despite which, you’ll feel totally secluded: the compound is gated and swathed by over four acres of monkey-patrolled jungle and tropical gardens.

Counter-balanced to move with just a prod, the main house’s mighty steel door opens onto a beautiful living room, its vaulted wooden ceilings surrounded on all sides by glass doors. These open to the infinity pool, ringed by an expansive deck for sunbathing or outdoor dining. Back inside is a superb kitchen, and four cavernous, ensuite sleeping quarters – including optional pack 'n play and twin beds.

A garden pathway leads to the aptly-named Casita Romantica, a separate house accommodating six more guests if required (if not, just book the main house) and fully furnished with its own eat-in kitchen, deck and infinity pool.

A housekeeper visits six days a week and, providing diverse cuisine, a chef is available. You can fly from San Jose to Quepos and transfer from there, or be driven two hours from San Jose via a stop above a crocodile-infested river. Once in situ, ask the concierge for advice on visiting Manuel Antonio – where more monkeys, sloths and a beautiful beach await – or walking down to beautiful Playa La Macha, its sand inaccessible by car.
